SEO Hasn’t Changed; Discovery Did.

Article SEO Hasn’t Changed; Discovery Did.

For months now, the industry has been throwing acronyms around like confetti: AEO, GEO, “AI optimisation”, “LLM visibility”, “ChatGPT rankings”.

I think we need to sit back and be honest. Search didn’t suddenly become AI, Discovery just expanded. By this I mean, people still search but now machines are searching on behalf of people. And because content is now being interpreted, consumed and surfaced in different ways across engines and AI systems, visibility itself looks different too. The fundamentals didn’t disappear they just show up in more places.

The problem is that our industry keeps repackaging the same fundamentals as innovations, usually to sell something.

Discovery has evolved. Thinking hasn’t.

The Real Shift

SEO is still very much the foundation, because if your site isn’t technically sound, discoverable, aligned to real user demand and gained trust over time, nothing that comes after it will work. Trying to bypass or move on from SEO signals; “We don’t actually know how to do it properly” or “We fearful of missing out on the next big thing”

When we talk about Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO), it’s not SEO for Chat GPT but should revolve around content that is clear enough for machines to confidently answer with it.

So, if SEO gets you found then AEO gets you used.

No clarity = No answers

Let’s move onto Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) which should not be about dashboard or position. We should be talking about representation when talking GEO. Your brand is either appearing accurately in AI generated responses, or, it’s getting ignored, distorted or replaced.

Anyone promising guaranteed “AI visibility" is either guessing or lying.

So whilst AEO and GEO does not replace SEO, they do collapse without it. Rebranding SEO doesn’t make it smarter, adding AI doesn’t fix weak content and fear-based buying doesn’t future-proof your business.

What does work is in fact boring, strong technical foundations, content built around real intent and authority earned, not fabricated.

It might be unsexy, but it's effective.

Myth-Busting: “Rank Tracking in AI Answers”

This one needs to die quickly.

You cannot track AI-generated rankings. There is no fixed position one. No stable SERP. No single truth.

AI answers shift with:

  • prompt phrasing

  • user context

  • model updates

  • probabilistic variation

So when someone shows you, “You’re ranking #2 in ChatGPT this week!” what they actually mean is, “Under one controlled test, at one moment, for one prompt, you appeared.”

That is sampling, not ranking.

Useful for insight? Sometimes. A reliable KPI? Absolutely not.

What matters instead:

  • strong entity presence

  • consistent representation across authoritative sources

  • clear, structured content

  • durable trust signals

The Lucid POV

At Lucid, we don’t split SEO, AEO, and GEO into separate boxes. We treat them as one connected discovery ecosystem.

DiscoveryOps is our evolution of SEO:

  • serving humans and machines

  • performing across search and generative systems

  • representing brands accurately in every answer space

  • future‑proofing visibility without chasing hype cycles

Discovery today isn’t about ranking. It’s about presence, wherever decisions begin.

In closing, the brands that win won’t be the one’s chasing acronyms. They’ll be the one’s showing up where decisions are formed, even when no one clicks.
